Refreshing and sustaining Nuffield Advanced Chemistry

Support from higher education
During the 1970s and 1980s the examiners and teacher trainers took over Nuffield Advanced Chemistry, led by Michael Vokins at Bristol University.

Michael devoted most of his R&D time as a university lecturer to supporting teachers of the course. He organised training events and took the lead in carrying out the research needed before the revisions of the resources.

This was a process which took place largely without Nuffield assistance throughout the 1970s and 1980s, though Nuffield helped the team to produce new editions in the mid 1980s, the early 1990s, and again in 2000.

Volunteer networking
Every year, for over 40 years, local enthusiasts for the course have hosted Summer meetings at which teachers can meet with each other, hear from the examiners, and be updated on new developments.

The examiners have shown an impressive ability to attend these meetings during the marking period - and to put up with the 'brickbats' when the papers are fresh in the minds of teachers.
