GCE Applied Science

A welcome challenge
Applied science courses at GCSE level are proving so successful that students who would not previously have continued with science post-16 are doing so. The number of students following an applied science pathway 14-19 looks set to rise dramatically in coming years.

Publications
Teaching GCE Applied Science for the first time requires considerable support. Student assignments for AS Units are commercially available. Now grants from The Wellcome Trust, The Institute of Physics and Gatsby SEP are enabling us to draft A2 student assignments and gather teacher feedback. Final publications, due late Spring 2008, will benefit teachers everywhere.

An e.community
Launch meetings for a network called Advancing Applied Science took place at the three regional Science Learning Centres in March 2007. These set up an e.community of over 80 members, hosted on the Science Learning Centres webportal.

Longer term
We hope to improve the quality of applied science courses post-16, by working with QCA and Awarding Bodies and researching authentic workplace practice. A two-day meeting in September, involving about 30 key stakeholders and hosted by the Nuffield 14 -19 Review, marked a good start to this process.
