Nuffield KS3 Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Project

Cris Edgell, Nuffield KS3 STEM director writes...
The Nuffield Curriculum Centre used the Association for Science Education annual conference January 2008 as an opportunity to hear from teachers and others, and to promote its new KS3 STEM project.

By drawing on the expertise of teachers and educationists we aim to develop challenging activities which explore the relationships between Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in authentic situations. Starting with Year 7 we will produce a series of free thematic courses which be continually updated and enriched. Find out more.

During the conference almost a hundred teachers volunteered to help write, review or trial materials. Would you like to participate? contact Steve Steward

Professor John Holman, DCSF National STEM Director and Director of the National Science Learning Centre gave the ASE Keynote Lecture.

John Holman talked about the importance of education in STEM subjects, and asked how may specialist scientists a developed country actually needs. If we really need more scientists, what can be done about it? What should be the strategies of the Government and the many other stakeholders in the science community? John pointed out that we should look out for inintended consequences of a focus on STEM subjects.
