Total Internal Reflection in action in an endoscope at the Whittington Hospital, Haringey. Dr Deepak Suri uses the endoscope to examine the inside of a patient's stomach.

Students watch the video and then do science and literacy activities based on what they've seen and heard.

Haringey Science

Helping teachers in Haringey
The Nuffield Curriculum Centre has worked with Haringey heads of science to produce materials with a Haringey focus for topics which students do not generally find interesting. At the heart of the materials is a series of videos of people using science in their work in Haringey.

The resources
For each GCSE Science topic there is:

  • a video specially shot in Haringey, illustrating the application and relevance to the science in Haringey
  • learning activities related to the video, including activities to practise literacy skills, and activities to raise aspirations for higher education
  • quizzes to use with an interactive whiteboard to provide rapid feedback on learning, and for some topics an animation or powerpoint presentation.

The topics are as follows:
1 Total internal reflection
2 Enzymes and industry
3 Genetic modification
4 Ultrasound
5 Seismic waves
6 Satellites
7 Renewable / non-renewable energy

A transferable model?
The model of videos of local science in action, with activities and quizzes related to them, could be adopted elsewhere.
