KS3 STEM Project
What is STEM?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. These disciplines have a complementary relationship in research, industry and construction but are taught as discrete subjects in schools.
Making Connections
We believe that pupils should be encouraged to make meaningful connections between the STEM subjects. For this reason we are currently developing a series of cross-curricular KS3 modules aiming to explore exciting contemporary themes through authentic tasks. By promoting both subject specific and transferable STEM skills we aim to help pupils to engage more effectively with learning in the 21st Century. The modules will refer to work-based practitioners demonstrating the range of career opportunities available, and prompting pupils to investigate the learning pathways available to them.
Developing the Modules
The modules will be designed with reference to the new National Curriculum orders which take effect from September 2008. We will involve a consortium of teachers from the outset to ensure that the project will satisfy their classroom needs. We will also provide online opportunities for resource development and review from the wider STEM community. The Year 7 module will be ready for trialling in September 2008 followed Year 8 and Year 9.
