The applied science approach
GCSE Applied Science is for those who may use science in their work. Students start by learning standard operating procedures and techniques, and the scientific knowledge underpinning them. They then have the opportunity to use their skills to solve practical problems. Many young people find this a motivating approach.
The various specifications which apply from September 2006 offer double-award and single-award applied science courses.
Links with the working world of science
Classroom activities need to be linked to science-related workplaces. Students benefit from seeing science in action in real workplace contexts. However, arranging site visits can be challenging. High-quality video material allows students to access a range of workplaces and makes obvious links between school practical work and the real thing.
Video clips can illustrate career opportunities in science. They can also explore some of the social and regulatory contexts within which scientists work.
