Members of 18 different organisations involved in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and STEM education met last week to discuss how to coordinate an approach to communicating with the media on issues related to STEM Education.
The Science Education Media Group (SEMG) has been convened in response to the public interest and controversy associated with STEM and education, and the need to represent accurately the range of interests and opinions of stakeholders. The SEMG will provide a direct route to experts who can comment on aspects of STEM and STEM education.
The group is interested in stimulating a balanced debate around STEM education, and will not present a single viewpoint. Unfortunately it may have to wait for the flurry of media interest normally associated with publication of examination results as the first opportunity to contribute to the discussion.
SEMG complements the work of the Science Media Centre, who promote stories about the science community.
