You are in: Curriculum issues > Maths issues > The use of intreractive whiteboards in maths teaching
At team at Keele University have been studying the use of interactive whiteboards in secondary maths classrooms.
The researchers have characteristed three stages that teachers pass through when they use whiteboards from supported didactic, to interactive to enhanced interactive.
The full potential for learning is only observed when teachers work at the enhanced interactive stage. This has implications for training and professional development because the progression through the stages is not necessarily automatic or rapid.
There is a marked change of thinking by teachers as they move to the third stage. At this level the whiteboard is used as a means of promoting discussion, explaining processes, developing hypotheses and testing them. At this stage teachers reflect on how their students learn and how technology can enhance learning. They show considerable ingenuity in developing approaches to meet specific learning needs.

The best thing since the Secondary Mathematics Individualised Learning Experiment which started in 1972-73. Thank God for Ronnie Goldstein! Well done ILEA!
