Maths education is in the news. There is lots of debate about functional mathematics. The new national centre for maths CPD is getting itself established.
Our own work in this field is been led by Geoff Wake and June Haighton who continue to develop resources for the AS Use of Maths and the Free-standing Mathematics Qualifications.
Today I have been to a stakeholder meeting organised by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

I have finally got round to looking at the DfES response to the Adrian Smith report on post-14 maths education.

The government's initial response to the recommendations from the Smith inquiry focus on teacher recruitment, training and retention. It will take a while for the implications for the curriculum to become clearer since action has to tie in with the work on the Tomlinson group.

On the 11th May, Geoff Wake convened a group here to discuss the recommendation of the Smith Report that the uses and applications of mathematics should be made central to the maths curriculum where appropriate.

The Adrian Smith Inquiry makes many positive references to the Free-standing Mathematics Qualifications and the AS Use of Maths.
