This morning I heard Bernard Crick on the Today programme discussing with Miriam Rosen of Ofsted the latest report from the inspectors about the teaching of Citizenship in secondary schools

Joseph Rotblat worked on developing the atomic bomb, but then spent most of his long life speaking out against it. Following his death in August, a memorial event to honour his life was held at The Royal Society on 9 December 2005. People from all over the world gathered to remember and pay tribute to a remarkable man.

Highwire, a project of the Hackney Learning Centre, aims to extend and enrich the school curriculum with imaginative ICT projects. It is organising a one-day conference on "Genetics and Citizens" Wednesday 22 June. Given Highwire's track record, this is guaranteed to be an interesting and useful day for teachers of a KS4 Science, English or Citizenship.

A very positive review of Learning Citizenship: Practical teaching strategies for secondary schools has been published on the CitizEd website – from a primary view-point. We are hoping that they will publish a secondary review as well!

Arts minister Estelle Morris announces a new national competition for key stage 3 students to use their computer and design skills through exploring issues of citizenship. 'Web Design Challenge' has been designed for 11 - 14 year olds and all schools in England are invited to take part.
